Co-Design Activities Report

The Creative Food Cycles Activities Report collects the international experiences, outputs and participants contributions developed over a two-years work programme, with particular reference to the socio-spatial and cultural perspectives. The project articulated on a recursive set of co-design actions —international workshops, art-installations fabrication, itinerant exhibition— has been developed as an intercultural exchange platform between three partner cities (Hannover, Barcelona, Genova), overlaying multiple issues tackled by Food Cycles and Urban metabolism, according to three main places, phases and field of expertise:

  • BARCELONA phase 1 _ production to distribution : IAAC demonstrates how self-sufficiency and ICT can be combined for enhancing food production in urban contexts, promoting responsive design practices by the use of digital fabrication in order to prototype micro-scale urban gardening / habitats;
  • HANNOVER phase 2 _ distribution to consumption : LUH focuses on new models of distributing, marketing, processing regional products into collective “urban food hotspot” characterized by multipurpose stages, connecting audience to open public activities and pop-up markets;
  • GENOVA phase 3 _ consumption to disposition : UNIGE explores the process which links food from consumption to disposal, by offering new potential meanings and fields of applicability from discarded products to product/service design, widening the concept of urban recycle.

The Activities Report is aimed at an international audience of professionals dealing with design-related disciplines bringing together creativity and innovation “from the spoon to the city” (Maldonado, 1970) Moreover, it addresses to a wider audience of local stakeholders, cultural operators, practitioners and active citizenship engaged with the manifold linkages of food-creativity-space and how these can foster the implementation of circular economy models in our cities. With this methodological structure, the project wants ot promote a new urban equation, aiming at the socio-spatial applicability of the following lines of inquiry:

How can cyclical thinking be fostered by Creative Food Cycles?
How can Creative Food Cycles promote new forms of commons?
How can Creative Food Cycles enhance co-design processes?

Creative Food Cycles: Partners and Hosting cities

In order to reach a wider audience diffusion, the project established a significant series of international cultural exchanges among partner and hosting cities (Ljubljana, Nancy, Patras, Antwerp) through an Itinerant Exhibition, promoting both emerging challenges and cross-cutting topics related to Creative Food Cycles.

The implementation of the Itinerant Exhibition has been carried out according to the open source design principles promoted by IAAC FabLab, part of FabLab international network. LUH and UNIGE contributed to the design and development the exhibition panels proposing alternative spatial configurations, according to the different venues and cultural context in which took place. The exhibition consists in 100 printed panels and 3 videoclips collecting interviews with experts, local stakeholders, participants and contributors who took part to working activities and teaching modules.
